Balmoral Castle

It has been a very busy summer for Time Exposure Travel, with many tours running and a lot to Balmoral Castle, the Royal Family’s home in Scotland.

We have been exploring the estate as well as the castle and have been to parts most visitors don’t get to see. These include some of the memorial cairns including Prince Leopolds from which you get a great view down on the castle. The estate also has many beautiful houses the Royal Family stay in, a golf course (open to the public), revamped gardens, statues of Queen Victoria and John Brown, horses and Highland Cows.

In the nearby St Manirs Church (the Crathie Church before Crathie Kirk was built) graveyard you will find Jogn Browns grave.

(Slàinte Mhath" (pronounced slan-cha va) can be translated as "Good Health”)

Great Aberdeen Walking Tour

A great walk around Aberdeen and Old Aberdeen. Centuries of history, amazing architecture, statues and plaques (Manson proved the link between mosquitos and Malaria), famous gravestones, endless miles of untouched beaches, Grey Seals basking in the sun, the oldest bridge in Britain, beautiful scenery and quaint streets. The square in the ground is where the “whipping punishment” post used to stand.

New Hollywood movie called Last Breath

There is a great new Hollywood movie out called “Last Breath” (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt14403504/) starring Woody Harrelson and Simu Liu, which is the true story of a commercial diver being stranded 300ft at the bottom of the North Sea. The boat the divers were working from departed from Aberdeen and in the opening scene of the movie you see Dunnottar Castle (which is 15 miles south of Aberdeen).

If visiting Aberdeen, we recommend a tour to visit this breathtaking castle, perched high on an outcrop of impregnable rock in the sea. It is shrouded in a long and bloody history including an attack by William Wallace (Braveheart) in the late 13th century.

A great winter tour and the “best” prison cell

After leaving Aberdeen we visited Huntly Castle which dates back to the 12 ^th century. A very interesting ruin with the “best” prison cell (a deep hole) and many an interesting carving on the walls (including Wyverns, which Game of Throne fans will recognise as the type of dragon that featured).

We had an excellent tasting tour at the Glenallachie Distillery and a Whisky Tasting by the fire at the Glenfiddich Distillery.

The Linn Falls were looking stunning.

Some Highland Cows came to say “hello” which made everyone’s day.

Winter can be a great time to visit Scotland

Did you know Aberdeenshire is famous for its blue-sky winter days? Also, for those who are interested in their photography, we get some amazing low winter light.

On one of our tours last week, we travelled up Royal Deeside to Balmoral Castle (the famous Scottish Residence of the Royal Family). We then tasted whisky at The Royal Lochnagar Whisky Distillery and saw the mountain called Lochnagar, where the pure water used by the distillery has its source.

The world famous Dunnottar Castle was looking imperious whilst bathed in low winter sun. With 2000 years of history behind it, and the most impregnable of settings, if you only see one castle, see Dunnottar.

One for Game of Thrones Fans

On a recent tour to Dunnottar Castle we met Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson (Hafthor Bjornsson) aka Gregor 'The Mountain' Clegane in the HBO series, Game of Thrones and one of world’s strongest men.

Dunnottar Castle, which was famously attacked by William Wallace (Braveheart) to take it back into Scottish hands in the 13 ^th Century and would have made an ideal location to film Game of Thrones.

Balmoral Castle Braemar Royal Lochnagar Distillery Tour

Another great tour today and the autumnal colours on Royal Deeside were stunning.

We visited Balmoral Castle after Crathie Church and then lunch was in the world famous Fife Arms Hotel in beautiful Braemar.

After lunch it was a Tasting Tour at the Royal Lochnagar Whisky Distillery. We recommend the 25 year old. Some Highland Cows came to say hello as well.

Week long tour to amazing places

July was a very busy month.

We did many tours in July and a big thanks to all our lovely guests.

One tour was a weeklong adventure that started and ended in Edinburgh. On route we meet Highland Cows, visited Balmoral Castle (among others), a few distilleries, The Culloden Battlefield, Eilean Donan Castle, The Old Man of Storr and saw some amazing scenery.

Great two day tour

We had a great two-day tour with a lovely family from Canada. After pick-up from Glasgow we headed to Scone Palace, the crowning site of many a Scottish King and the home to many Peafowl. It also has amazing grounds and a challenging maze. In the afternoon we visited the amazing Glamis Castle (the home of the Queen Mother).

After a night in the picturesque village of Pitlochry we toured the stunning Blair Castle which dates back originally to the 13th Century. We then headed north to Aberdeenshire where we met some Highland Cows and visited the stunning Crathes Castle and their ever-impressive gardens.

Peafowl (Peacocks and Peahens) at Scone Palace

On our great tour around Perthshire and Aberdeenshire, the Peafowl at the magnificent Scone Palace were in the grounds and we were lucky to find one “guarding” the Ancient Abbey. A famous site dating back nearly 1000 years.

6 Day Tour of Amazing Aberdeenshire - Post Four – Lunch Venues

Over the week we visited six restaurants for lunch and the whole group agreed every meal was fantastic. They were The Flying Stag in the famous Fife Arms, Braemar (complete with Picasso original on the wall), The Seafield Arms, Cullen (famous for Cullen Skink), The Mash Tun, Aberlour (over 250 whiskies), The Milton of Crathes picturesquely set next to the River Dee, The OGV Taproom with amazing views over the Forvie Sands and the famous Seal colony and last but not least Eat on the Green in the tiny village of Udny Green and offers an out of the world culinary experience.

Wow – what a trip

A great tour to Inverness and the Isle of Skye. Loch Ness and Castle Urquhart were looking amazing, but the highlight was our walk up to the Quiraing (some of the movie Highlander was there).

This is a place of rugged beauty, dramatic landscapes and surreal vistas and an excellent example of the untamed beauty of the Scottish Highlands. Its unique rock formations, shaped by millennia of geological processes, draw visitors from around the world. The area is characterized by towering cliffs, pinnacles, and plateaus, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside and coastline. After we explored the Fairy Glen and spotted a Hen Harrier on route.

The photographs show Loch Ness, Urquhart Castle, hotel, the oldest house in Inverness, Abertaff which dates back to the 1500’s (complete with marriage lintel), The Quiraing, Harrier and The Fairy Glen.

Highland Cattle

On some of our tours you have the opportunity to meet up close, the famous breed of Scottish Cattle. They have been roaming in Scotland for over 1500 years. We take you to a working Highland Cow Farm where you will learn all about them and you can even give their hair a brush (which they love).

After you can enjoy and savour a Highland Beef Lunch. A must for all meat eaters if you have never tasted this delicious (a very natural) product.

Time Exposure Travel Week Long Tour. Day 8- Ancient Universities Chapels and a famous golf course bridge.

Sadly, today was the last day of our great tour. We first visited Old Aberdeen, where the Aberdeen University Campus is. It was founded in 1495 and offers a myriad of ancient buildings to visit.

Next was St Andrews, the home of golf (after a visit to beautiful Aberdeen Beach). We did a tour of the ancient city cathedral, the castle which dates back to the 13th Century, the University Campus (founded in 1415), saw people swimming in the sea lido and the very famous Old Course.

There was a lot of activity there, as preparations for the Walker Cup were in full swing but we had access to the Swilken Bridge for photographs. Lastly it was a drop off in Edinburgh.

Time Exposure Travel Week Long Tour. Day 7- Cairngorms, Cows and Castles.

Today we left Inverness and drove over beautiful The Cairngorm National Park to Royal Deeside.

First stop was the gates of Balmoral Castle (King Charles is in residence) and Crathie Kirk where the Royals attend church.

We visited the lovely village of Ballater before arriving at the Highland Beef Farm.

Here Grace, the owner, gave us a wonderful tour. We met and learned about some of her prized cows and got to give them a brush, which they love. This was followed by a wonderful lunch and saying hello to the pygmy goats.

Then we visited we the beautiful Crathes Castle and gardens.

To finish off the day we visited the stunning Dunnottar Castle which sits on and impregnable headland of rock. This amazing and impressive ruin should be a must of every visitors list.

Time Exposure Travel Week Long Tour. Day 6 - From Highlander to Outlander.

This morning we arrived at the very famous Eilean Donan Castle, which spectacularly sits on a small island and is attached to the mainland by a bridge.

If you have seen the movie “Highlander” you will instantly recognise it.

Next was Urquhart Castle, a stunning impressive ruin on the banks of Loch Ness.

Then it was “Nessie” spotting time on our Loch Ness cruise. We only saw her a couple of times today. ��

Before heading to our Inverness Hotel, we visited the fascinating Clava Cairns, a 4000 year old burial site. These were the inspiration for Craigh Na Dun in “Outlander”.

Time Exposure Travel Week Long Tour. Day 5 - From Harry Potter to Prometheus.

Today on route to our ferry to the Isle of Skye, we visited the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct, which all Harry Potter movie fans will be familiar with.

On Skye we walked up to magical Fairy Pools set underneath the foreboding Cuillin Ridge.

After lunch we visited Dunvegan Castle, defensively built atop a cliff. It has been continuously lived in longer than any other, 800 years.

Before finding our hotel in Portree, we walked up to The Old Man of Storr, an amazing 800m tall rock pinnacle, and anyone who has seen the movie Prometheus will recognise it.

Time Exposure Travel Week Long Tour. Day 4 - Wow

Today we first visited the truly stunning Glencoe. Then we took a walk up to the Steall Wire Bridge via the Glen Nevis valley. There we were presented with an amazing waterfall 100’s of feet tall. Well worth seeing but to get underneath it, you have to cross a three wire bridge, which is great fun.

Later in Fort William we visited “Neptunes Ladder”, an engineering marvel at the end of the Caledonian Canal and offers great views of Ben Nevis.

Time Exposure Travel Week Long Tour. Day 3 - Islands and Wildlife

Today we took a tour out to the spectacular and famous island of Staffa, which is also known for Fingals Cave. Staffa itself has stunning basalt rock formations and stepped columns (which make it easier to navigate).

On route via the Treshnish Isles we saw many dolphins, seals and seabirds.

On one of small islands (rock outcrop) we passed the remains of Cairnburgh castle which amazingly dates back to the 13th century.

Very worth visiting.

Later we took the ferry back to lovely Oban.

Time Exposure Travel Week Long Tour. Day 2 - It’s a long way down.

Today we took the ferry to the Isle of Mull. An island with much to offer. Great views of Dunollie Castle and Duart Castle on route. First stop was Duart Castle which dates back to the 13th C. It has been very well preserved and contains many fascinating exhibits.

After lunch we braved the scary heights at the impressive Eos Fors Waterfall, one of Britain’s most impressive. It drops vertically over 100 feet into the sea, but also has some beautiful pools near the cliff top.

After a visit to the Old Byre Heritage Centre, where you can learn much about ancient life and the wildlife on Mull, we arrived in the very picturesque village of Tobermory.

Time Exposure Travel Week long Tour. Day 1 - Worth the walk

Today we picked up the lovely Canadian Maclean family from Edinburgh Airport.

We first visited “The Kelpies”, the world famous huge mythical horse sculptures.

The we went to the fascinating and stunning Stirling Castle which played a key role in a lot of Scotlands history.

After lunch we climbed Ben A’an. A short but steep walk rewarded by stunning views ( albeit interrupted by a helicopter rescuing a hiker who had fallen).

Arrived in Oban for the evening and a lovely sunset to round off a great day.

Burns Night

.Burns Night is a “day” where Scotland celebrates and commemorates the life and works of their national poet, Robert Burns. This tradition started over 200 years ago in 1801, when nine of the poet’s closes friends held a dinner to mark the 5-year anniversary of Burns death.

During supper the friends ate the traditional dish of Haggis and a sheep’s head whilst reciting some of Burns poems. Nowadays Burns Night is held on the 25 ^th of January, Burns Birthday, and is considered another National day, aside from St Andrew’s day.

Nowadays the suppers tend to be 3, 4 or 5 courses. The starter can be a traditional soup such as Cock-a-leekie or Scotch broth. This is followed by the mandatory haggis, served with neeps and tatties and often as a main course but occasionally this may followed by other Scottish offerings like salmon or beef. As desert such as Sticky Toffee Pudding will be the final course prior to the Scottish cheese board and a glass of Whisky.

Before and after supper many graces and toasts are made in honour of Robert Burns, such as the “Immortal Memory of Robert Burns” or the “Toast to the Lassies”. All suppers must finish with many recitations of Burns poems and sometimes a ceilidh will follow. Traditionally a rendition of “Auld Lang Syne” (Burns most famous poem that is sung) will bring the night to a close.
